Good-quality hydraulic band sawmills: Often can hold cuts within about 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) under good conditions.
Well-tuned manual or hobby mills: Commonly achieve around 1/8 inch (3 mm) accuracy.
Rough or poorly maintained setups: May vary by 1/4 inch (6 mm) or more across a board.
Factors that affect accuracy include:
Blade sharpness and tension: A dull blade or incorrect tension can cause the blade to wander, creating tapered or uneven boards.
Blade type: Wider, thicker blades generally track better; thin-kerf blades reduce waste but can be more sensitive to conditions.
Log movement: Logs that shift during cutting can cause uneven thickness.
Feed speed: Pushing too fast can make the blade deflect.

For rough framing, a well-set band sawmill is usually accurate enough. For fine furniture or precision joinery, the lumber normally needs additional milling after sawing.
