A sawmill blade should generally be changed or resharpened when cutting performance starts to decline, rather than after a fixed number of hours. For many band sawmills, a blade may cut effectively for several hours of continuous sawing before it needs sharpening, but actual blade life depends heavily on wood species, log condition, blade quality, feed speed, and maintenance.

Signs You Should Change or Sharpen the Blade

Watch for these common warning signs:

Cuts become rough or uneven

Cutting speed decreases

The blade starts wandering

More sawdust or heat is produced

The blade requires more feed pressure

Boards become inconsistent in thickness

Teeth are chipped, cracked, or excessively worn
