What Determines Daily Output of A Sawmill?

Log diameter and length – Larger, straight logs can improve productivity, while irregular or oversized logs require more handling.

Wood species – Hardwood and dense tropical timber generally cuts more slowly than softwood.

Sawmill configuration – Hydraulic loading, automatic feeding, and computerized controls can significantly increase throughput.

Operator skill – Experienced operators reduce loading, positioning, and cutting downtime.

Working hours – A machine running 8 hours/day will naturally produce less than one operating two shifts.

Blade condition – Sharp, properly tensioned blades maintain higher cutting speed and better recovery.

Example

If a band sawmill processes 3–4 m³ of logs per hour and operates for 8 hours, its theoretical daily processing capacity could be around 24–32 m³/day. Actual lumber output will be lower because of sawdust, slabs, edgings, kerf loss, and downtime.
