A timber sawmill is a facility or machine used to cut logs into usable wood products, such as boards, beams, planks, or dimensional lumber. It's a critical part of the lumber production process, transforming raw timber (trees) into materials for construction, furniture, flooring, and more.
How a Timber Sawmill Works
The process typically involves several key steps:
1.Log Delivery & Sorting
Trees (logs) are transported to the sawmill and sorted by size and species.
2.Debarking
Bark is removed from the logs using mechanical debarkers to prepare them for cutting.
3.Primary Breakdown (Head Rig Sawing)
A large saw (often a bandsaw or circular saw) cuts logs into large pieces called:
Cants (rectangular log sections)
Flitches (partially squared boards)
4.Secondary Breakdown (Resawing)
These pieces are then cut into standard sizes such as 2x4s, 2x6s, or planks.
5.Edging & Trimming
Uneven edges are removed to create straight, consistent boards.
6.Drying
Lumber is dried (air-dried or kiln-dried) to remove moisture and reduce shrinkage or warping.
7.Planing & Grading
Boards may be smoothed and graded based on quality and intended use.
